Carbamazepine Uses

Carbamazepine is primarily used as an anticonvulsant and mood stabilizer. The main approved uses include treatment of epilepsy (certain types of seizures), management of trigeminal neuralgia (a chronic pain condition affecting the facial nerve), and, in some formulations, treatment of bipolar disorder (especially for acute manic or mixed episodes)[1][2][3][4][5][6].

  • Epilepsy: Carbamazepine is indicated to treat generalized tonic-clonic seizures, mixed seizure patterns, and partial seizures with complex symptoms[1][2][3][4][6].
  • Trigeminal neuralgia: It is widely prescribed for relief of nerve pain due to trigeminal neuralgia, a condition that causes intense facial pain[1][2][3][4][5][6].
  • Bipolar disorder: Certain extended-release formulations (such as Equetro) are approved to treat acute mania or mixed episodes in bipolar I disorder[3][4][5][6].

Additional, off-label uses may include management of neuropathic pain related to diabetes (peripheral neuropathy), as well as adjunctive treatment for other pain syndromes and some cases of alcohol withdrawal or restless leg syndrome[1][5].
