Cogesic Blue Tablets Uses

Cogesic blue tablets are a combination medication containing paracetamol (500 mg) and codeine phosphate (8 mg) per tablet. They are formulated as flat blue tablets, typically scored on one side for dosing convenience[2].

Primary uses of Cogesic blue tablets:

  • Relief of mild to moderate pain — This includes pain such as headaches, dental pain, musculoskeletal pain, and postoperative pain[3].
  • Reduction of fever in febrile (feverish) conditions[3].

Paracetamol works as an analgesic (pain reliever) and antipyretic (fever reducer), while codeine acts as a centrally acting weak analgesic. Codeine’s pain-relieving effects are primarily due to its conversion to morphine in the body, and its combination with paracetamol enhances overall analgesic effect[2].

Typical Dosage:

  • Adults: One or two tablets every four to six hours as needed, not exceeding 8 tablets per day.
  • Children over 12 years: One tablet every four to six hours.
  • Children 6 to 12 years: Half to one tablet every six hours.

Continuous use should not exceed five days without medical supervision. The dose should be reduced in elderly or debilitated patients[4].

Contraindications include:

  • Hypersensitivity to paracetamol or codeine
  • Respiratory depression, acute alcoholism, head injuries, raised intracranial pressure, or following certain surgeries
  • Use during labor (due to risk of respiratory depression in the newborn)

Consult with a healthcare provider before use, particularly if you have underlying health conditions or are taking other medications.
