Colofac tablets are primarily used to treat the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), including abdominal pain and cramps, bowel spasm, diarrhoea, and flatulence[5]. The active ingredient is mebeverine hydrochloride, an antispasmodic agent that works by relaxing the muscles in the gut, thereby relieving IBS symptoms[1].
Besides IBS, Colofac is also indicated for relief in several other bowel conditions that share similar symptoms, such as:
- Chronic irritable colon
- Spastic constipation
- Mucous colitis
- Spastic colitis
The typical symptoms addressed by Colofac include stomach pain and spasms, bloating and wind, diarrhoea (with or without alternating constipation), and abnormal stools such as small, hard, pellet-like, or ribbon-like faeces[7].
Colofac tablets should be swallowed whole with water, generally one tablet three times per day, about 20 minutes before meals for optimal effectiveness[1].
