Lagatrim Tablets Uses

Lagatrim tablets, which contain a combination of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim (co-trimoxazole), are used to treat a range of bacterial infections proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible microorganisms[1].

  • Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia: Therapy and prophylaxis in adults and children two months and older[1].
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs): Treatment of severe or complicated UTIs, including cystitis and pyelonephritis, especially when oral administration is not feasible or single-agent antibacterials are ineffective[1].
  • Shigellosis: For enteritis caused by Shigella flexneri and S. sonnei[1][2].
  • Acute otitis media: For pediatric patients with infections due to Streptococcus pneumoniae or Haemophilus influenzae, when there is a medical reason to prefer co-trimoxazole over other agents[2][3].
  • Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis: For adults with infections due to susceptible bacterial strains[2][3][4].
  • Travelers’ diarrhea: Treatment of diarrhea due to susceptible enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli[2][5].
  • Upper and lower respiratory tract infections: Including acute and chronic bronchitis, when sensitivities confirm the medication’s suitability[3][4].
  • Skin and soft tissue infections: Such as pyoderma, furunculosis, abscesses, and certain wound infections[3][4].
  • Septicemias and other bacterial infections: Including those due to sensitive microorganisms[3][4].
  • Other specific indications: Such as acute or chronic osteomyelitis, acute brucellosis, nocardiosis, mycetoma (excluding fungal types), South American blastomycosis, and toxoplasmosis—usually when there is strong medical indication and bacterial susceptibility[3][4].

The selection and use of Lagatrim should be guided by bacterial culture and susceptibility data, local epidemiology, and clinical guidelines to help prevent the development of drug-resistant bacteria[1][3].
