Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride Uses

Levocetirizine dihydrochloride is primarily used to relieve symptoms associated with allergies, such as sneezing, runny or itchy nose, itchy or watery eyes, and sore throat, commonly seen in both seasonal (hay fever) and perennial allergic rhinitis[1][3][5].

It is also used for the symptomatic treatment of chronic idiopathic urticaria, which involves recurrent skin rashes or hives with unknown cause, resulting in itching and discomfort[1][3][5][6]. Levocetirizine may be recommended as part of combination therapy for other allergic conditions, and has demonstrated effectiveness in both adults and children for short-term and long-term management[1][2].

  • Seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) – treats symptoms including itchy nose, redness, sneezing, and watery eyes
  • Perennial allergic rhinitis – used for ongoing, year-round allergy symptoms similar to those occurring in seasonal allergic rhinitis
  • Chronic idiopathic urticaria – relieves itching and hives occurring more than twice a week for months or years
  • Mild to moderate allergies – alleviates general allergic reactions and associated symptoms
  • Adjunct treatment in cold and fever – occasionally given in combination with other medications for upper respiratory symptoms
  • Asthma – sometimes used alongside other drugs, such as montelukast, to address breathing difficulties from allergic triggers

Levocetirizine, being a second-generation antihistamine, works by blocking effects of histamine (a chemical involved in allergy responses) and is associated with fewer sedative side effects compared to older antihistamines[4][7]. In addition to its antihistaminic action, some studies have noted anti-inflammatory benefits that may further enhance its effects in allergic diseases[2].
