Mengen 500Mg Uses

Mengen 500mg is primarily used as an oral hypoglycaemic medicine for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, especially when dietary management and exercise alone do not result in adequate glycaemic control[1][3][5]. It is particularly recommended for overweight patients with type 2 diabetes, where monotherapy or combination therapy with other oral anti-diabetic medicines or insulin may be indicated[2][3].

Mengen 500mg contains metformin hydrochloride, which helps lower blood sugar levels by several mechanisms:

  • Decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose
  • Reducing hepatic (liver) glucose production
  • Improving insulin sensitivity, thus increasing glucose uptake and utilization by the body[4][7][8]

Mengen may be used as:

  • Monotherapy (alone) in adults and adolescents from 12 years of age who have not achieved adequate control with diet and exercise
  • Combination therapy with other oral anti-diabetic medicines (such as sulphonylureas) or with insulin
  • Part of insulin-dependent diabetes management, in combination with dietary regulation[1][3]

Additional benefits observed for metformin (the active ingredient in Mengen) include a favorable effect on lipid metabolism—lowering total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride levels[2].

In clinical studies, Mengen (metformin) demonstrated the following outcomes in overweight patients with type 2 diabetes:

  • Significant reduction in the absolute risk of diabetes-related complications and overall mortality
  • Lower risk of diabetes-related death and myocardial infarction compared to diet alone or other monotherapies[2]

The usual adult dose is one 500 mg tablet taken three times daily with or after food. Dosage should be adjusted according to blood glucose response, and maximum effect may take up to two weeks. Special care should be taken in patients with impaired kidney function, and regular monitoring is advised[1][3][6].
