Nexium (esomeprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor used to decrease the amount of acid the stomach produces. It is commonly prescribed for:
- Treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), including healing and maintenance of erosive esophagitis caused by stomach acid[1][2][7].
- Management of peptic ulcers, including duodenal and gastric ulcers, especially when associated with Helicobacter pylori infection (used in combination with antibiotics)[2][3][5].
- Prevention and treatment of stomach ulcers related to the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)[1][2][4].
- Treatment of pathological hypersecretory conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, where the stomach produces excessive acid[1][2][5][7].
- Management of dyspepsia (indigestion) and associated symptoms such as heartburn, nausea, and abdominal pain[3].
Nexium can be used both for short-term and, in specific conditions, for longer-term therapy, with the dose and treatment duration determined by the particular condition being managed[2][7]. It is available over-the-counter for some indications, such as frequent heartburn, and by prescription for others[4].
