Nexum Tablet Uses

Nexium (esomeprazole) tablets are primarily used to treat conditions related to excessive stomach acid, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), duodenal and gastric ulcers, and erosive esophagitis[1][3][5]. They may also be indicated for Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and for the prevention of ulcers due to the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)[1].

The tablets work by reducing stomach acid production, helping heal acid-related damage, alleviate heartburn, and prevent ulcer formation[1][3][6].

  • Used to treat heartburn and acid reflux disorders such as GERD[1][6].
  • Helps heal and prevent ulcers in the stomach and duodenum[1][5].
  • Prevents damage to the esophagus caused by acid, known as erosive esophagitis[1].
  • Reduces the risk of ulcers for people taking NSAIDs[1].
  • Treats Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a rare disorder causing excessive acid production[1].

Dosage and administration: Nexium is usually taken once daily, 1 hour before eating, but can be prescribed twice daily for some conditions. Tablets should be swallowed whole and not crushed or chewed[1][3].

Common side effects include headache, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, flatulence, dry mouth, and sleepiness[1][2][3][4][5].

Rare but serious side effects may include kidney problems, severe allergic reactions, low magnesium or vitamin B12 levels (especially with long-term use), bone fractures, skin reactions, lupus, and severe gut infections[2][3][4][5][6].

Precautions: Inform your healthcare provider if you experience severe diarrhea, allergic reactions, skin rashes, muscle spasms, irregular heart rate, or symptoms of liver or kidney problems[3][4][5][6]. Use as directed and do not double up doses if a dose is missed[3].
