Amlodipine Uses

Amlodipine is primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children over six years old[3]. By lowering blood pressure, it helps reduce the risk of strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems[6].

It is also used to manage several heart-related conditions, including:

  • Coronary artery disease (CAD), which involves the narrowing of the blood vessels supplying the heart[3]
  • Chronic stable angina (persistent chest pain usually triggered by physical activity or stress)[2]
  • Vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal’s or variant angina, chest pain caused by spasms of the coronary arteries)[2]

Amlodipine may be prescribed alone or together with other medications (such as statins) to further reduce cardiovascular risk or prevent hospitalization for angina and some heart procedures in patients with recently diagnosed coronary artery disease but without certain types of heart failure[4].

The drug works by relaxing and widening blood vessels through its calcium channel blocking effect, improving blood flow and making it easier for the heart to pump blood[1]. This mechanism also increases blood and oxygen supply to the heart, which helps to control angina (chest pain)[3].
