Cloment is primarily indicated for the treatment of severely ill patients with schizophrenia who fail to respond adequately to standard antipsychotic medications[1]. It is also used in adults to reduce the risk of suicidal behavior associated with schizophrenia and similar disorders[2]. In addition, clozapine (the generic form of Cloment) is sometimes prescribed for schizoaffective disorder and for the treatment of psychosis in Parkinson’s disease[3][6].
Clozapine belongs to the class of second-generation (atypical) antipsychotics, acting primarily by balancing serotonin and dopamine in the brain to help modulate mood and thought processes[3]. It is reserved for patients with treatment-resistant schizophrenia due to its risk profile and the need for careful monitoring[6].
Cloment is only available from certified pharmacies under a special program due to its potential for serious side effects, most notably severe neutropenia (significantly low levels of a type of white blood cell), which increases the risk of serious, potentially fatal infections[1][2]. Regular monitoring of the absolute neutrophil count (ANC) is required before and during treatment[1].
