Ivedal Uses

Ivedal is used for the short-term treatment of insomnia in adults with severe sleeping difficulties, specifically to initiate sleep in cases where non-pharmacological treatments have not been effective or are unsuitable[1][2][4].

It contains the active ingredient zolpidem tartrate, which is a sedative-hypnotic medication that works by increasing the activity of GABA, a neurotransmitter in the brain, resulting in sleepiness and reduced sleep latency (the time it takes to fall asleep)[1][3][5].

Key uses and information about Ivedal:

  • Prescribed for short-term management of insomnia (sleep difficulty), primarily to help initiate sleep[1][2][4].
  • Typically recommended only after behavioral therapies (like cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia) are ineffective[4].
  • Should only be used for brief periods (usually up to two to six weeks) due to risk of dependence and tolerance[1][4].

Contraindications and precautions:

  • Do not use if allergic to zolpidem tartrate or any of the tablet’s ingredients[1].
  • Contraindicated in patients with myasthenia gravis, sleep apnea, severe lung or liver problems, in children under 18, or during pregnancy and breastfeeding[1].
  • Increased risk of physical and psychological dependence, especially for individuals with a history of substance abuse or mental disorders[1].
  • May cause side effects such as memory difficulties, confusion, tiredness, and risk of falls (especially in older adults)[1][4].

Administration guidance:

  • Take as a single dose immediately before bedtime, with at least 7–8 hours allocated for sleep[3].
  • Avoid activities requiring full alertness (e.g., driving) the morning after use due to residual sedation risk[4].
  • Not indicated for long-term use or for patients with less than 4 hours of intended sleep time[6].
